Pink Boots, 2020
Something I sketched quickly on my iPad Pro. I was loosely referencing a photo and it was just supposed to be a “warm-up” sketch before moving on to a planned illustration…but in the end I realized it was a nice little piece all on its own and decided to make prints of it.

Yet again I am faced with the fact that I like my unplanned, faster “sketches” much better than most of my planned work. It’s imperfect, to be sure, but the imperfect pieces always have so much more character that is often lost in the process of revising a drawing or painting.
I recently bought some photo reference packs and I think I just want to sketch from reference for a while. This would free up some brain power to just focus on playing with line, color, and composition, without having to fret over posing too much.
